The architects of the recently opened Indian Ocean Tsunami Memorial at the Natural History Museum and the 7 July Memorial in Hyde Park, London, are designing the Frieze Art Fair which opens next month in Regent’s Park, London.

Carmody Groarke, a London-based architectural studio, has built a reputation for forward-thinking design, since it was established by Kevin Carmody and Andrew Groarke in 2006. The studio won two RIBA awards in 2010 and received the Building Design UK Young Architect of the Year (YAYA) in 2007.

This not their first foray into the art world. They have previously collaborated with contemporary artists, including Antony Gormley, on his Blind Light pavilion at the Hayward Gallery, and Carsten Holler, on The Double Club for Fondazione Prada.

In previous years, the fair – which attracts 60,000 visitors over four days – has employed a series of internationally recognised architectural firms including Caruso St John (2008 to 2010), Jamie Fobert (2006-2007) and David Adjaye (2003 to 2005). The architects’ brief is to make the fair an inviting and unique experience and they are encouraged to experiment, adding to the experience of the fair.

Frieze 2011 runs from 13 to 16 October.
