Tree House Living

The tree house has been an adventurous childhood feature for communities and individuals for some time. Arguably, originally built for leisure and as a form of playhouse these tree forts have now become much more of a desirable and contemporary dwelling or business location. Architecturally speaking, there is a meeting of minds when designing such structures that draw upon bespoke designs and eco-friendly living.

Described favorably by architect Robert Harvey Oshatz as, ‘canopy lofts’, these lodgings provide a unique living space experience. Built for a multitude of purposes, tree houses are usually constructed using some part of the actual tree. Branches can act as an integral part of the design by traveling through the structure of the rooms inside. More mature trees help with the support of larger, permanent residences as apposed to recreational structures that are usually in addition to the main family home.

With various designers and architects working together on a range of different styles, tree houses can accommodate individual needs from family living spaces, artistic abodes and eco-living. A recurring theme featured by the majority of architects is that these dwellings are designed to enhance and embrace the environment in which they are built.

The actual foundations for these structures are relatively environmentally friendly as they use particular trees to accommodate designs, however once you start to actually build the interior you can really make your mark. Often built using recycled furniture, salvaged materials, solar panels and composting toilets these tree homes offer environmentally stable and sustainable living. For me the modern tree house is collaboration between nature and design, which gives a unique perspective on living spaces.

  1. What an interesting artical, makes me want to go find a tree and build my own! A well written piece, who would have thought the humble child’s tree house could be so grown up!
