Easter is the next occasion on the 2012 menu and to celebrate the festivities Sophie Conran and Rhea Thierstein have decorated fiberglass eggs to be showcased in two boutique London hotels. Futurespace Magazine talks to both designers about the inspiration behind their quite contrasting themes.
From 21 February 2012, Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel, Belgravia, London will play host to set-designer-of-the-minute Thierstein’s decorated egg. Thierstein told Futurespace Magazine her inspiration came from a recent visit to Borneo where she witnessed first-hand the “alarming rate” of the destruction of the environment and natural world.
“The little Blue Tit, Caeruleus, is the element of optimism. The hope is that through sensitivity and awareness we can nurture our habitat and environment back to health,” she said.
To create the design, Thierstein papier-mâchéd her egg with two old maps, painting over it with inks and emulsion to make it feel older, worn and varnished – like an old globe.
Around the corner, Jumeirah Carlton Tower, Knightsbridge, London will display the egg of English interior designer, cook and writer Sophie Conran.
The daughter of designer and restaurateur Sir Terence Conran took her inspiration from the first spring in Eden. Conran said she wanted her egg to “embody the softness and beauty of the English countryside and blend that with the joy, colour and vibrancy of the tropics.”
“The idea was for it to be uplifting and make you smile, the way seeing a garden of spring flowers or the first blossom does.”
Her egg will be positioned in front of the hotel overlooking the beautiful private gardens of Cadogan Place.
“I think Jumeirah Carlton Tower, one of London’s first tower hotels, is a very fitting home for it. It’s great that the egg will be positioned in front of the hotel overlooking the beautiful private gardens of Cadogan Place while it bursts into spring with all its blossoms and flowers.”
The egg display forms part of an Easter egg hunt and egg-themed dinner event run by two charities, Elephant Family and Action for Children.
