The Sound of Dust: the story of surfboard shaper Tim Stamps

Writer: Gem Barton

Words from the artist Tim Stamps:

”I spent my younger years riding skateboards, motorcycles, and watching my dad build race speed boats. I took to the water at about the age of 12 and began surfing everyday. It wasn’t long until i found myself in a local surfboard factory watching these surf crafts being built. It was a place of familiar sights and sounds. From then on I continued to surf and slowly, one step at a time began the learning process of building surfboards, start to finish.  Competitive surfing came and went, a college degree was completed and building boards remained. To this day surfing and building boards is my passion.”

  1. Technically beautiful little film. Torn between the handmade craftsmanship of Tim’s art and the need for digital manufacturing. The Bauhaus conundrum? Model in 3D on a computer and let a 5 axis CNC router make 20 of them? Nah…take 3 days to make individual unique boards – feels right.
