They say a great brand is defined by its story and its reputation and I for one would have to vigorously agree whilst pointing you swiftly in the direction of Hunter, a prime example of a story well told and a reputation that is impeccable. Here’s a global brand that has steadily grown and flourished since its early beginnings in 1856, proudly picking up royal warrants along the way; and don’t we all love a by-appointment-company that manages not only to embrace modern trends and fashion but also stay true to its heritage? All this enhances the product and also our experience of it, making us feel part of that heritage, part of the story – whether we are in fact landed gentry, festival-goers, farmers, city-dwellers or dog-owners, we all want a pair of Hunters, don’t we?
I’m not much of a festival girl myself anymore but I remember seeing a picture of Sienna (or was it Kate?) in a pair of black ones way back in 2005, on some muddy field in Hampshire in denim hot pants (must’ve been Kate, then). That image was all it took to kick start the desire and a few days later I was sporting my very own pair, parading down a windswept and very damp Brighton seafront feeling cool and glamorously British in my black rubber boots. To this day they feel and look just like they did in 2005. Of course nowadays I tend to wear my Hunters over old jeans and the only field you’re likely to find me on is a Swiss one where the dog can run uninterrupted for at least a kilometre. When we moved to this part of the world from the UK 5 years ago, I felt quite sure that I could very well be the only girl in the village with a pair, but clearly Hunter have done their job well, as there are an increasing number of ladies flashing their boots with the un-mistakeable red and white logo even here.
So here we are in 2011 and Hunter’s range has grown to epic proportions. Prices have risen slightly over the years, but not unrealistically. I dare you to go and find out for yourself which is your own particular favourite. I can guarantee it won’t be an easy choice as there really are so many; I have a particular fondness for the Original Gloss in Candy Pink or Duck Egg Blue, but would also be seriously tempted to go for something otherworldly like the Hunter & Jimmy Choo Hiker or the fabulously glamorous Melrose wedge boot in black.
