Katie Bourne Interiors: Children’s Wallpaper Design

When I was asked to write an editorial about wallpaper my initial thought was, how am I going to tackle this? – Having only painted walls myself I had little idea of how much of a task wallpapering a room could be. After reading a few articles I started to realise how important walls are within interior design – and if you’ve spend x amount of time gluing and sticking and smoothing you are probably going to appreciate those walls quite a lot more.

Katie Borne Interiors designs wallpaper exclusively for children, with a simplistic “hand drawn” style and a subtle humor to the characters Katie uses high quality wallpaper to create beautiful designs for children’s bedrooms, playrooms and nursery’s.

Drawing on traditional story book themes and narratives the wallpapers would suit most tastes and styles due to their contemporary design, appealing to both parents and children alike. The way in which the designs feature a range of illustrations from giraffes and circus tents to balloons and tractors allows the child’s imagination to run wild, creating a range of different stories. Bedtime has never been so fun! I remember when I was very young, my mum used to “read” me Little Pickle, by Peter Collington. This book had no words, just a beautifully illustrated story made up of images – each time my mum looked at this book with me the story would be slightly different, it was my favourite and to this day I’ve never tired of it.  I imagine Katie’s wallpaper is similar, parents could read a story across the images, making fascinating worlds and inspiring characters from the beautiful illustrations.

Katie herself has always had a passion for children’s artwork and animation styles, particularly book illustration. I think she has managed to merge her passion well with aspects of design within interiors to create various interpretations of the world around her through her simplistic and modern wallpaper.  The paper itself is of a very high standard; “These beautifully illustrated wallpapers are made and printed in England using traditional techniques on high quality sustainable forest paper.” The current design themes consist of, “Merry Go Circus” and “Cluck a Doddle Farm” which are available in a range of colour schemes to suit most home interiors.

I distinctly get a sort of “homely cottage” feel when I look at these designs and can imagine simple white wooden furniture upon a dark wooden floor matching the wallpaper well – but that’s just me. Katie Borne Interiors has designed a beautiful range of wallpaper exclusively for children and she is definitely a designer to keep an eye on in 2012.
