“As beautiful un-lit as they are fully illuminated,” is how the organisers are describing the ten lighting installations which form Lux Craft – a dedicated lighting exhibition within Origin: The Contemporary Craft Fair, which opens on Thursday 22nd September as part of the London Design Festival.
The creations of these designer-makers include storm boxes using high pressure air; sculpture which marries glass, inert gasses, light and mixed media; and dazzling neon sculptures.
The ten were selected from 280 applicants from across the world by a panel led by the Crafts Council and Nokia Design. The panel invited proposals from new and established makers working in all disciplines for installations which capture the beauty of light. The works could include light-emitting sources such as lamps or they could use lit surfaces.
The installations were made using a variety of processes and materials from hand-crafted bone chia and hand-blown glass to Perspex, Styrofoam and Lumilace (a fusion of traditional textile crafts and advanced fibre technology).
Lux Craft is at Origin: The Contemporary Craft Fair, Old Spitalfields Market, Brushfield Street, London, E1 6EW from 22 to 28 September.
