‘Empire State of Pen’ by Patrick Vale

Words by artist Patrick Vale:

Having drawn a lot of cityscapes in the past, i thought it would be fun to timelapse myself drawing a large piece..
I set up my i-phone on a rough and ready rostrum held together by gaffer tape and away i went.

I used an app called imotionHD which is great although i had to export frames every half an hour (1200 odd) so that slowed up the process. Having been to NYC recently i had some great reference shots. I like to draw on location where possible, but even when im not i treat it the same by drawing quick and keeping it loose. 4/5 days later the drawing was finished.

The great thing about having all the frames is that you can then play with the speed in the edit and through this can communicate the energy and vibrancy of a bustling city like NYC..the Charles Mingus piece really helps this along..the lines track building in unison.

Huge thanks to Patrick for sharing a personal insight with us.
